A Sundown Affair’s Italian-dark expression settles into the blend’s richest register. Dark chocolate cake provides the foundation, followed by fig jam cookie and the warming fruit of mulled wine.

A limited-harvest Colombia Excelso supplies baker’s chocolate and prune depth while underneath, our Ethiopia Sidamo Bombe keeps a fruity tang alive. Full and enveloping, it's shaped for early sunsets and evenings spent closer to home.

ROAST: Italian Roast (Dark)
OTHER DETAILS: Low-acid by roast design

99.9% Caffeine-Free & 100% Chemical-Free

Due to its limited availability, this limited release coffee is not offered as a subscription option.

Dekáf'd by way of Swiss Water® Process

Originally pioneered in Switzerland, the Swiss Water® Process now operates in Canada. The gentle decaffeination method uses only water, temperature, and time. Zero chemical solvents.

Swiss Water® Process involves using Green Coffee Extract to tempt the caffeine out of the beans -  immersing the beans in water already saturated with coffee’s natural compounds (minus the caffeine). Because the water is already “full” of flavor compounds, it selectively targets caffeine molecules, leaving flavor and aroma intact.

Activated carbon filters then sweep away the caffeine molecules, preserving the bright notes and captivating aromas unique to the coffee’s origin. The result? A truly elegant, rich-tasting decaf...all free of chemicals.

A SUNDOWN AFFAIR - DARK EXPRESSION

LIMITED FALL RELEASE

Dark roasting is often discussed only in terms of intensity. For our dark expression of A Sundown Affair, its transformation is the more interesting story.

With extended development, the fruit that appears crisp and confectionary in the Nordic expression takes on a darker shape. Sweetness becomes deeper, acidity turns wine-like, and the Colombia Excelso moves decisively toward its baker’s chocolate and prune character. Ethiopia Sidamo Bombe remains present, but its brightness now works as a subtle lift beneath the roast.

The result recalls layered flavors of dark chocolate cake, fig jam cookie, and mulled wine. It has the confidence of a dark roast without leaving the fruit behind.

If A Sundown Affair suggests something unfolding after daylight, this is its candlelit interpretation.

    Delicious

Amazed at how good it is. Been getting Peet’s of Starbucks for years and it is so bitter compared to this coffee. Grinding and putting in K cups, but so worth the effort for great tasting strong, decaf coffee. Always added stuff but now I drink black. Thanks. So glad I found you.

    An Affair to Remember

I'll start by saying that Italian and French roasts are not my general preference. I'm more inclined to medium and medium-dark roasts. However, having found in Dekaf Coffee Roasters a roaster that does so well with decaffeinated coffees, when I came across their special A Dundown Affair, I decided to give a try. I'm gald I did.

In overview, this is one of the better Italian roasts I can remember trying, decaf or regular. It delivers the bold taste and very full body that lovers of dark roast coffee seek while maintaining a pleasing complexity of flavor. However, make no mistake: such a bold cup that may not be for everyone. Its flavor demands your attention and is not content with lingering in the background.

Neither will the bold taste of A Sundown Affair be lost with the addition of milk and sweetner, only softened. Even half-and-half does not overwhelm it. If adding sugar, I suggest perhaps trying a little brown sugar, or, for an extra treat, Demerara or Turbinado sugar.

Observations on brewing with the pour-over method: use a slightly coarser grind, water with a neutral pH level, a lower brewing temperature, and a slightly tighter coffee/water ratio. For me, that translated to a medium grind; water with pH of 7, alkalinity of 55, and TDS of 150; a brew temp of 200; and a coffee/water ratio of 1:15.

Be sure the water is fully "flat" before pouring, typically about 30 seconds after taking it off the source of heat. On the first pour saturate the grounds and wait a…
